Biden's "Challenge" at the Southern Border, Marco Rubio and the Future of the GOP, and the Voting Rights Debate Moves to the Senate

Episode Summary

When a politician tells you something’s not a problem and instead calls it a challenge, it’s probably a problem. This week, President Biden’s Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas admitted that what is happening on America’s southern border is at least “a challenge.” Twice as many people tried to cross the southern border illegally in January of this year compared with January a year ago. President Biden’s own advisers told him this week that the number of unaccompanied migrant children crossing the U.S. border this year will likely far exceed the previous record. Also, the battle for the future of the Republican Party continues. We look at one 2024 presidential contender, Senator Marco Rubio of Florida, who is calling for something called "Common Good Conservatism." And the House passed H.R. 1, a new bill that would nationalize certain election rules. How the bill fares in the Senate will tell us a lot about whether we’ve entered an era of bipartisan cooperation.
